Coney Island really was an island until the creek silted up. Now it is a five-mile long peninsula that sticks out like an appendix at the southern end of Brooklyn. In recent years it has undergone quite a bit of construction, and the glamorous amusement parks of yesteryear have made way for highrise apartments and condominiums. Only a few attractions remain active, but one can still find a few parks with roller coasters, ferris wheels and merry-go-rounds. Along the thick wooden planks of the boardwalk are booths selling all kinds of food, including the famed 'Coney Dog' and cotton candy. At the very end of the boardwalk is the New York Aquarium.
